How We're Set Up
Our production staff is split into the underwriting and brokerage departments. In the underwriting department, underwriters have in house authority to quote, bind, and issue policies for over 13 markets. If a risk falls outside of our binding authority, then the underwriters have to submit it to the market. Our underwriting dept generally quotes lower hazard business(except contractors) and more “main street” type business than our brokerage department. Classes written in underwriting are lower limit property, general liability, package, commercial auto, garage liability, cargo, and liquor liability.
All the markets we place business with are rated at least A – by AM Best. Our brokerage unit does not have binding authority and has to negotiate each account with their markets. Brokers have access to over 50 markets, each with unique expertise. The more unique and one of a kind accounts are quoted in our brokerage department. The lines of business written in brokerage are general liability, professional liability, directors and officers liability, employment practices liabilty, excess and umbrella liability, high value property, and environmental liability.
Underwriting and brokerage do write some of the same classes(GL, property, liquor) and it can be a little confusing trying to figure out if you should send a risk to a broker or an underwriter. You don’t need to worry about whether an account should go to underwriting or brokerage. Just send it in and it will get to where it needs to go.
