ADCO Management

Richard Thomas CPCU- Owner & President

Dick has been in the insurance business since 1968.  His first insurance job was with Liberty Mutual in San Francisco from 1968-1970.   He started at Adco in 1970.  He became a CPCU in 1974. Dick co- founded the Surplus Lines Association of Colorado in 1982 and was president of the Colorado SLA from 1987-96. He was on the NAPSLO Board of Directors from 1987-89. He was on the Board of Directors for Guaranty National Corp from 1990 to 1998. 

In 1989 Dick got Adco tribunalized at Lloyds of London. After Adco’s founder(Ed Willis) passed away in 1990, Dick became the sole owner of Adco. He was named Company Person of the Year by PIIAC (Professional Independent Insurance Agents of Colorado) in 1997.  He has been on various company advisory boards, including Capitol Indemnity, Penn America, Guaranty National, and American Western Home. Dick is a Colorado native and graduated from the University of Colorado.

Stacy Beakes- Brokerage VP.

Stacy has been in the insurance industry since 1973. He has been with Adco since 1998.  Stacy oversees production and marketing the brokerage department while at the same time working as a broker.  He worked for various wholesale operations in Denver prior to Adco.  
He was the regional manager and broker for Montgomery & Collins from 1986-1998 and Cravens & Dargens & Co from 1981 – 1986. He was on the board of directors for the Colorado Surplus Lines Association from 1982 – 1989.  Stacy was on the Shand Morahan advisory board from 2004-2005. Stacy is originally from upstate New York and graduated from St. Lawrence University.

 


Bob Birch- VP –Underwriting

He started with Adco in 1983 after a few other stops along the way. He was vice president of the Colorado Insurance CO-OP from 1981 – 1983.  From 1978-1981 he was a program administrator for Frank B. Hall of Colorado.  From 1972 – 1978, he was an assistant commercial lines manager for Travelers.  

He currently oversees underwriter production, marketing,  profitability of our in house binding authority markets, and also manages our programs. Bob grew up in Massachusetts,  served 4 years in the U.S. Army, and graduated from Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.



Alex Thomas  CPCU, ASLI- Director of Marketing/ part owner

Alex(Dick’s son) is a Colorado native and graduated from the University of Oregon in 1999.   After college, he did an internship at Scottsdale Insurance Company from 1999-2000. He moved back to Denver after the internship and went to work at Adco in 2000. He was strictly a broker for his first 5 years at Adco, then became Director of Marketing in 2006. 

He still brokers some business, but is mainly focused on marketing. His duties include developing marketing materials, website development,  visiting clients, and helping Adco effectively deliver their products.  Alex completed his ASLI(Associate in Surplus Lines Insurance) in 2003 and completed his CPCU in 2006. Also in 2003, he was named Young Company Representative of the Year by PIIAC. 


 

Mark Thomas- Underwriting AVP/part ownerMark(also Dick’s son) has been in the insurance business since 1999, when he started at Adco.  His duties at Adco include underwriting(mainly transportation), underwriting management, and assisting with marketing efforts.  He is a member of the Young Agents of Colorado(PIIAC) and the AAMGA Under Forty Organization(UFO).  Mark is a Colorado native and graduated from the University of Colorado.

Susan Throop CPCU: Underwriting Manager


Adco was Susan’s first insurance job when she started in 1989. She started out as an underwriting assistant and she worked her way up to underwriter and now assistant underwriting manager.  She started out as an underwriting assistant, worked her way up to underwriter, and now manages our underwriting department.

 

Nancy Stutz - Secretary/Treasurer 


She started at Adco in 1976 and it was her first insurance job. She started out as the receptionist and worked her way up the ranks.  Nancy moved into accounting, then became accounting manager, and now is our Secretary and Treasurer. Her job mainly consists of accounting and book keeping, but she also acts as our office manager.  Nancy also runs our premium finance unit. Nancy is Dick’s sister and is a Colorado native as well.

 

Marilyn Mitchell- Accounting Supervisor 

  
She has been with Adco since 1970. When she started at Adco there were only 5 employees compared to 35 now.  After Dick,  Marilyn has worked at Adco the longest time. She started out as an accounting assistant and worked her way up to accounting manager. She helps people with all their accounting  needs, including invoices, audits, monthly statements, surplus lines tax, cancellations and return premium.  She also helps manage our premium finance unit.  Marilyn was born in Iowa, but has lived in Colorado most of her life.
