Who We Are. What We Do.

Adco General is an independent, family owned, regional wholesale insurance broker with national capabilities.

Adco General is the largest independent wholesale insurance broker based in Colorado.  We do not work with the general public, but with insurance agents.  When an agent can’t place a risk with their in house standard markets, they come to us in order to have access to over 60 specialty excess & surplus lines markets from around the world (including Lloyds of London).

Richard Thomas CPCU - Owner & President

Dick has been in the insurance business since 1968.  His first insurance job was with Liberty Mutual in San Francisco from 1968 to 1970.   Dick started at Adco in 1970 after returning to his native city of Denver.  He became a CPCU in 1974.  Dick co-founded the Surplus Lines Association of Colorado in 1982 and was president of the Colorado SLA from 1987 to 1996.  He served on the NAPSLO Board of Directors from 1987 to 1989 and then sat on the Board of Directors for Guaranty National from 1990 to 1998.

In 1989 Dick got Adco tribunalized at Lloyds of London. After Adco’s founder Ed Willis passed away in 1990, Dick became the sole owner of Adco. He was named Company Person of the Year by PIIAC (Professional Independent Insurance Agents of Colorado) in 1997.  He has been on various company advisory boards, including Capitol Indemnity, Penn America, Guaranty National, and American Western Home.  Dick is a Colorado native and graduated from the University of Colorado.

How Adco is Set Up

Our Account Executives have access to over 100 excess and surplus lines insurance markets; all rated at least A- by AM Best.  The two main differences between the insurance carriers we represent is the fact that some give us in house binding authority while others operate only a brokerage basis.  Some of our companies write binding authority and brokerage business.

Our binding authority companies generally write lower hazard business and more “main street” type accounts.  Adco’s Account Executives have the ability to quote and bind submissions that fit the guidelines provided by the insurance company.  Classes written by our binding authority markets include general liability, lower limit property, package, commercial auto, garage liability, inland marine, and liquor liability.

If a risk falls outside of our binding authority then your Account Executive will to submit the account to our brokerage markets.  Brokerage companies do not give us binding authority so we must negotiate with the carrier to secure a quote.  The more unique and one of kind accounts are quoted by our brokerage markets. Typical lines of business written by our brokerage companies include general liability, professional liability, directors and officers liability, employment practices liability, excess and umbrella liability, environmental liability, and high value property.

Send your submission to any of our Account Executives and we will get it where it needs to go.  If you have any questions about working with Adco General please contact our VP of Business Development, Alex Thomas at 303-605-2083 or This email address is being protected from spambots.
